EU Set to Impose €500 Million Fine on Apple
European Union is reportedly preparing to levy a substantial €500 million ($539 million) fine on tech giant Apple (AAPL.O) for alleged breaches of EU competition law. According to unnamed sources, the fine is expected to be officially announced early next month.
The European Commission had previously accused Apple of distorting competition within the music streaming market through its App Store rules. These rules allegedly restrict developers from informing users about alternative purchasing options, providing Apple with an unfair advantage.
Last year, the European Commission launched an investigation into Apple’s business practices, formally accusing the company of violating competition rules. The EU regulatory body argued that such practices hindered fair competition in the digital marketplace, adversely affecting both consumers and competing businesses.
While the European Commission declined to comment on the report, it is anticipated that the €500 million fine will serve as a robust regulatory response to address the alleged violations. Apple has not responded to requests for comment outside of regular office hours.
This impending fine reflects an ongoing trend of increased scrutiny and regulatory actions against major tech companies by global authorities, as concerns over fair competition, consumer rights, and market dominance continue to be focal points on regulatory agendas.
