Extensions that process data before a page loads can considerably slow down your browsing experience. While Chrome extensions can enhance internet browsing, some may unknowingly hinder your browser’s performance.

A recent study by Debug Bear, a web page optimization service, examined 5,000 extensions to determine their impact on Google Chrome. The findings showed that certain extensions could significantly increase website load times due to their data processing methods. For instance, VPNs can introduce delays of up to a full second by routing traffic through an intermediary server.

Conversely, extensions that execute their code post-page load can also affect Chrome’s performance, albeit to a lesser degree. Examples include Trancy AI Subtitles and Klarna Pay Later. Even if these extensions do not cause long load times, they can make web page interactions sluggish.

For example, Avira Password Manager introduces a 160-millisecond delay when specific content is clicked. Although this delay might seem minimal, it is unclear whether it can accumulate, potentially leading to noticeable performance degradation.
