Meta’s messaging platform, WhatsApp, has begun introducing an augmented reality feature for video calls, allowing users to apply various effects and filters. This update, specifically for WhatsApp Android version 2.24.20.20, enables users to personalize their video interactions using new visual tools, as reported by WABetaInfo.

The latest update introduces a filter button within the camera interface, making it easy for users to apply filters with a simple tap, enhancing both photos and videos. Previously, WhatsApp allowed effects during video calls, but now users can easily explore and apply filters in real-time before capturing images or recording videos. Additionally, the skin-smoothing option will help users minimize blemishes and uneven skin tones.

Moreover, the messaging platform has reintroduced a background-changing feature that was once available only during video calls. This feature allows users to replace their real-world background with virtual scenes or blur it entirely, adding a creative touch to their video interactions.

In related news, WhatsApp has also launched a new feature in its beta version for Mac users, enabling them to access and follow channels directly from the desktop app. This update, which is available on TestFlight, rebrands the Status tab as “Updates,” integrating status updates and channels for easier navigation. Previously, Mac users could only view limited channel updates via notifications due to inadequate support.

This transition to the Mac Catalyst app is expected to be completed next month, enhancing the user experience. The channel feature allows users to follow public channels, such as news outlets, influencers, and businesses, to stay updated with their latest content. This feature is currently accessible to select beta testers and will be rolled out to a wider audience soon.
