IT Minister Plans to Leverage TikTok for Educational Purposes

Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, met with a TikTok delegation on Wednesday to discuss mutual interests and ways to enhance the quality of content on social media platforms.

The delegation, led by Emer Gilmartin, Director of Public Policy, included officials from TikTok, with Secretary IT Zarar Hasham Khan also attending the meeting.

The delegation briefed the Minister on TikTok’s ongoing initiatives and future plans in Pakistan. During the meeting, Khawaja highlighted TikTok’s massive popularity among Pakistani users and emphasized the importance of accessible, high-quality content.

She proposed using the platform to promote educational purposes, especially in teaching skills and basic education in local languages.

Khawaja underscored that TikTok could be a powerful tool for skill development and knowledge sharing, benefiting various segments of society. She also expressed the full support of the Ministry of IT for initiatives aligned with this vision, aiming to harness TikTok for educational and skill-building efforts.

The TikTok delegation responded positively, committing to ensuring more constructive and educational content on the platform. They expressed their readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of IT to further these initiatives and strengthen their engagement with the Pakistani community.
