Meta introduces community notes on Threads
Meta has announced plans to replace traditional fact-checkers with a new feature called Community Notes on its Threads app. This move comes as the platform continues rolling out popular features and updates in recent weeks.
Community Notes, initially known as Birdwatch on X, allows contributors to add context, such as fact-checks, to posts, images, or videos. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that the feature was inspired by X, which already uses a similar system under Elon Musk’s ownership.
Renowned tech leaker Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots providing insights into the feature’s functionality on Threads. Users will be able to initiate a Community Note by selecting the three-dots menu on a post.
Community Notes will roll out to users in the United States in the coming months, with plans to enhance the feature further throughout the year.
In addition to Community Notes, Meta is updating its content moderation policies. The company aims to lift restrictions on certain sensitive topics, such as immigration and gender, while phasing “civil content” back into its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
With these updates, Meta focuses on user-driven context and more open platform discussions.
