TikTok Chief Thanks Trump for Support Against Looming US Ban
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew expressed gratitude to US President-elect Donald Trump on Friday for his dedication to collaborating with the company to find a resolution that would keep the app operational in the United States.
The social media platform faces a January 19 deadline to sever ties with its China-based parent company, ByteDance, or cease US operations to address national security concerns.
On Friday, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a ban. Meanwhile, a White House statement indicated that President Joe Biden would not intervene before the deadline.
Trump also commented on the matter, stating that the decision regarding TikTok’s future rests with him. However, he provided no specifics on what measures he might take. Media reports suggest he is considering an executive order to delay enforcement of the TikTok sale-or-ban law by 60 to 90 days.
Trump revealed that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed TikTok and other matters during a phone call on Friday.
Chew is reportedly planning to attend the US presidential inauguration on January 20, where he will be seated among high-profile guests invited by Trump, according to a source.
