Google Messages may soon support WhatsApp Video Calls
Google Messages is reportedly working on integrating WhatsApp video calling within the app, aiming to enhance its functionality and compete with rival messaging platforms.
With its robust RCS support and deep integration into the Android ecosystem, Google Messages has gained traction as a leading messaging service.
Continuous updates, such as secure cross-platform RCS messaging, dual SIM RCS support, a native backup tool, and RCS compatibility for 911 emergency services, have further strengthened its position.
The latest update, discovered by AssembleDebug in Google Messages v20250131, introduces a dedicated WhatsApp Video Call button. This feature allows users to start a WhatsApp video call directly from Google Messages, provided both participants have WhatsApp installed.
Currently, video calls within Google Messages default to Google Meet if both users have it installed. The new update will enable users to choose between WhatsApp and Meet when initiating a video call, depending on availability. If the recipient does not have WhatsApp, the option will not be displayed.
The feature is still under development and, at this stage, is limited to one-on-one video calls. Group video calls will continue to rely on Google Meet.
