The Mayor of Antwerp suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction after an interviewer noticed he wasn’t wearing any trousers during their video call.
Bart de Wever, the mayor of the second biggest city in Belgium, wore a smart shirt for the radio interview which was broadcast from his own home. The 50-year-old chose to forego trousers for the chat, believing only the top half of him would be visible from his phone camera.
Unfortunately for the mayor, a strategically placed mirror behind him showed his nude legs. It took until four minutes into the interview with the Flemish broadcaster Radio 2 that the presenter acknowledged the mishap.
She said: ‘I’m a little distracted, Bart de Wever. You are wearing a very nice shirt, probably you wore it especially for us because you know people are watching on the Radio 2 app.
‘But under that shirt, could it be that you are there in your underwear?’
De Wever, who heads the Flemish separatist New Flemish Alliance Party, replied: ‘How do you know that?’
Then, realising his mistake, he said: ‘I’m probably sitting in front of a mirror. I had not taken that into account.
‘The year begins with a particularly embarrassing moment, I’ll remember this for a long time.’
De Wever’s counterpart in the French-speaking liberal party, Georges-Louiz Bouchez, poked fun at the mayor in a tweet which was accompanied with a picture of boxer shorts in the colours of the Belgium flag.
