After being diagnosed with cancer, a Michigan couple has pushed back their wedding date.

Clay Slenk, 24, proposed to his high school sweetheart Mariah Nelesen, 23, in December 2020, with their wedding set for June 10 of this year.

The couple’s plans were thrown into disarray in January when Nelesen received a phone call from her doctor informing her that she had ovarian cancer.

Slenk’s life was turned upside down just eight days later when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

“We’re really into it,” Slenk told KTLA in an interview. “And it isn’t just one of us; it is both of us.”

In both good and bad health.

A Michigan couple has rescheduled their wedding after being diagnosed with cancer.

Clay Slenk, 24, proposed to his high school sweetheart Mariah Nelesen, 23, in December 2020, with a wedding date set for June 10 of this year.

When Nelesen received a phone call from her doctor informing her that she had ovarian cancer, the couple’s plans were thrown into disarray.

Only eight days later, Slenk’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.

“We’re really into it,” Slenk said in an interview with KTLA. “It’s not just one of us; it’s both of us.”

“We moved our wedding date up so we could be married during that time, so she could take care of me and we could go through that difficult part together,” Slenk explained.

Despite the uncertainties that await them in the future, the couple remains optimistic as they prepare to begin life as a married couple.

“Why are you upset? “If I’m angry, frustrated, down, and negative, it’ll only make this day that much worse,” Slenk explained.

On the bright side, the groom claims that the diagnoses have already strengthened his bond with Nelesen and made him realise that she truly is the love of his life.

“It won’t be easy going forward, but we know that it’ll be more meaningful to go through it together,” he declared. “There’ll be a little more sickness before the health, but that’s alright,” he said.
