BAREILLY: In an unusual event, a man kicked his wife out of the house after she refused to vote for his preferred political party in the recent Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has now requested that the state police file a FIR and take serious action against the man for allegedly assaulting and evicting his wife.

The 21-year-old woman’s husband has also threatened to divorce her. According to police, the woman has yet to file a formal complaint against her husband.

According to reports, the woman was ejected from her husband’s home in Baradari, Bareilly, on March 11 after telling a relative that she was pleased that the candidate she supported had won the election.

The woman claimed that the party for which she voted had enacted strong legislation to better the situation of Muslim women in India.

After her husband assaulted her, she sought help from an NGO, which publicised the incident and alerted the police.

Following media reports, NCW chairman Rekha Sharma has written to the UP director general of police (DGP) demanding that the woman’s husband and in-laws be prosecuted. Both families are neighbours, and the couple married in love in 2021.

Baradari SHO Neeraj Malik said, “The woman is yet to approach police with a written complaint. We will take action if a complaint is lodged by her. If she wants action against her husband, we will register an FIR. And, if she wants us to mediate and resolve the marital dispute, we will transfer the case to the mediation cell to ensure that their marriage is not broken.”
