A Florida teen who was attacked by a shark at a well-known beach on Friday and lost part of her leg is in critical condition, according to officials.

Around 3 p.m. on Thursday, the child was wading in 5-foot-deep water in Taylor County when the shark, which was estimated to be 9 feet long, suddenly attacked her.

A relative swam into the water in a panic and attacked the shark, forcing it to let go of the bleeding girl.

The juvenile was apparently freed by a family member who dove in and beat the shark, according to a posting on Facebook from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office.

The critically hurt girl was attended to by emergency personnel on the beach before being flown about 80 miles to a hospital in Tallahassee.
