Huge electricity bills can be a pain, especially if you’ve been using your air conditioner or heater a lot. No matter how much these high bills bother us, all we can do is use less electricity than we need to.

Most of us, however, would not give up electricity completely and go back two hundred years. But, as crazy as it sounds, a family has done just that, and it’s making news because of it.

The Metro said that 53-year-old Chavdar Todorov was worried about the £320 or Rs 31,000 electricity bill he got every month. After talking about how to cut down on the bills, the whole family decided to stop using electricity.

Todorov has now told his family to save money by wearing headlamps. Todorov and his family, which includes his wife Moda, who is 49, and their children Teo, 14, and Nicole, 20, now wear torches on their heads after dark because there are no lights in the house.

Candles are another nighttime home lighting option. Todorov told Metro that it felt like they were living in the 18th century and that the head torch cost Rs 820, compared to their large monthly expense. They heat the house weekly.

Moda says that while she agrees with the idea her husband came up with, she sometimes feels unsafe in the dark because there have been break-ins in the area.”We light candles and try to make it romantic,” she said.
