Brits are warned that stores may run out of eggs by Christmas due to “cannibal chickens” destroying the protein source.

The sources claim that suppliers have warned that a sharp rise in issues such as avian flu and energy prices, combined with a cost-of-living crisis, might lead to a shortage of eggs.

That bird flu outbreak, the worst England has ever seen, raises the prospect of potentially cannibalistic hens driven by a desire to peck their fellow poultry to death.

Supermarkets across the country report a severe shortage of eggs, with “supply issues” affecting some locations.

“We are currently experiencing supply issues across our fresh eggs range, we are working hard to resolve these and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said a shelf at a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Dorking.

Due to these inconveniences, egg supply has begun to fall as a result of rigorous new limits imposed on poultry farmers in order to combat a raging bird flu outbreak.

According to one expert, the main issue is that chickens in cramped areas will be pushed to “cannibalism.”

Keeping hens “in confined spaces can bring all sorts of issues which can end in cannibalism,” according to Anthony Allen of Cotswolds Chickens.

Since October of last year, more than 200 instances of avian flu have been verified, with an alarming increase potentially leading to a shortage of eggs on shop shelves.

One concerned farmer told The Telegraph that it was a “genuine threat to the industry.”

Poultry provider Charles Mears said, “It’s a genuine threat to the industry. We’ve been warning people for a long time, but people have been expecting cheap food, which just isn’t sustainable. It’s like watching a slow car crash.”

“If the government does not intervene to support farmers, there will be no eggs by Christmas.”
