Erratic thinking and impulsive behaviour in those suffering from mental illnesses can have fatal results. If a person does not understand what is going on, they may experience feelings of rage, worry, grief, and helplessness. Such issues can lead to suicide ideation. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, psychiatric disorders account for 90% of suicides. The experience of this man, who swallowed hundreds of pennies, putting him close to death, exemplifies the life-threatening impact of mental problems.

Dyamappa Harijan, 58, of Lingsugur, Karnataka, has been suffering from a mental health ailment for a long period. Dyamappa’s problem caused him to consume around 187 coins weighing 1.5kg over a two to three month period. He was admitted to the Hanagal Shree Kumareshwar Hospital and Research Centre for treatment after experiencing stomach ache and vomiting.

After performing an endoscopy, the physicians were taken aback when they discovered a stack of pennies lodged inside Dyamappa’s stomach. The physicians operated on the man for two hours before successfully removing all of the coins from his abdomen.

“He was suffering from a psychiatric disorder and had been swallowing coins for the last 2-3 months. He came to the hospital complaining of vomiting and abdominal discomfort,” said Dr. Eshwar Kalaburgi, one of the surgeons. The doctors discovered 56 five-rupee coins, 51 two-rupee coins, and 80 one-rupee coins among the coins recovered.

According to Dyamappa’s family members, although being mentally disturbed, he was usually under control. They were caught off guard when the 58-year-old began gathering money and swallowed them. Dr. Eshwar Kalaburgi expressed relief after the surgery was successful in saving the patient.
