109 exotic animals were discovered in two Indian women’s baggage at the Bangkok airport on Monday, leading to their arrests. According to a Facebook post by the Thailand Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the two intended to smuggle the creatures, which included white porcupines, turtles, lizards, and snakes, on a Thai Airways trip to the Chennai airport.

The two women have been named as Nithya Raja, 38, and Zakia Sulthana Ebrahim, 24. Officials from the Suvarnabhumi airport patrol allegedly discovered two suspicious things in their bags after scanning them with an X-ray machine. After further inspection, two white porcupines, two armadillos, 35 turtles, fifty lizards, and twenty snakes were found in their baggage.

The women were detained and accused of violating the Customs Act of 2017, the Animal Act of 2015, and the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act of 2019.

Two deceased iguanas and dehydrated reptiles were discovered, according to a Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation press statement in Thai. According to sources, they have been given vitamin supplements, proper care, and have been moved to a wildlife rescue facility.

In Thailand, there have been a number of instances of animal trafficking through airports. A month-old leopard cub was apparently discovered in the luggage of a man arriving at the Chennai airport from Bangkok in 2019. He was reportedly held by customs officials.
