Viral video: It may seem like VFX effects or an alien in a viral video of a glass octopus, but neither of those things is the case. The glass octopus (Vitreledonella richardi) is a highly uncommon mollusk that can be found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. These lovely creatures can be found hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface, where sunlight cannot penetrate.
The Oxygen Project tweeted the video, which was first published by SchmidtOcean. The glass octopus is extremely uncommon to see. The video demonstrates that, true to its name, the glass octopus is almost fully transparent. Only its optic nerve, stomach, and eyeballs are opaque. The video has 440 likes and more than 20,000 views. The beauty of the unusual and enigmatic creature enthralled internet users.
Glass octopuses were not found until 1918, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. In the wide ocean, it is typically found in tropical and subtropical regions.
