A female tourist risked the anger of locals after climbing and dancing on a Mayan pyramid in Mexico.

The anonymous woman, believed to be of Spanish origin, provoked fury on Monday when she defied all norms and protocols to climb the Mayan Temple of Kukulcan in Chichen Itza.

An enraged mob splashed water on her, screamed insults, and demanded she is imprisoned immediately because of her terrible behaviour. According to reports, she was even attacked by several people for offending locals by climbing the hallowed shrine.

The woman was seen climbing the structure despite complaints from onlookers below the pyramid, according to footage uploaded online.

When the visitor performed a short dance after reaching the top, some people became really furious.

A person at the bottom of the stairs was observed urging her to come down as she swung her arms in celebration.

There were loud jeers from tourists on the ground who were watching her actions.

At the end of the video, an angry throng surrounds the woman as she attempts to walk through. Some people threw water from bottles at her.

According to reports, security personnel from the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History escorted the woman down the pyramid (INAH). Even as irate neighbours booed her, she was securely removed from the area.

Another video circulated online shows a woman in yellow tugging the tourist’s hair as she was led away.

Other people thronged around her, some even flung stones at her and used the Spanish word “carcel,” which means prison.

According to reports, the woman was arrested and fined for scaling the world-historic landmark.

El templo is another name for the Temple of Kukulcán. The Chichen Itza archaeological site in the Mexican state of Yucatán is dominated by a Mesoamerican step-pyramid.

The temple was built between the 8th and 12th centuries AD by the pre-Columbian Maya civilisation.

It was a temple to the Yucatec Maya Feathered Serpent deity Kukulcán.
