In an unexpected turn of events, Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, takes over as interim CEO following the board’s decision to fire Sam Altman, co-founder and previous CEO of ChatGPT. The decision was announced on Friday, with OpenAI citing Altman’s lack of regular candour with the board as impeding its capacity to execute its tasks and eroding confidence in his leadership.

Mira Murati, 38, was born in Albania and reared in Canada. She has a wide and interesting background. She displayed her mechanical engineering prowess at Dartmouth College by building a hybrid race car. Murati has worked in the aerospace, automotive, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) industries. Notably, she was instrumental in the creation of the Model X at Tesla.

Murati, who is fluent in Italian, Albanian, and English, joined OpenAI in 2018, originally concentrating on supercomputing strategy and team management. Her leadership abilities and expertise allowed her to participate in critical decisions, assisting in the implementation of key projects inside the firm.

Last year, Murati took on the job of coordinating the deployment of ChatGPT, the pioneering AI chatbot that catapulted OpenAI into the spotlight. Murati’s broad expertise and strategic vision position her to lead OpenAI through this transition by emphasizing transparency and collaborative decision-making.
