AirBnb is notorious for its bizarre accommodations, which can often startle even the most seasoned traveler.

Staying in a shop window for $1,300 a night might be a bit much for some, but one American traveler was eager to take advantage of the deal.

As part of the annual Art Basel art fair in Switzerland, the listing was supposed to be a hoax.

The ploy took a turn for the worst when the woman accepted the offer at the Kleinbasel Leihlager store on Feldbergstrasse.

‘The whole thing was a marketing gimmick, at no point did we anticipate that someone would actually book or visit,’ Gawin Steiner, a member of the Leihlager team, told Swiss media.

The window was originally posted for 3,300 Swiss Francs ($3,393/£2,768), but the woman’s gracious hosts lowered the price, and she checked in on June 14.

‘She booked for three nights, and we renegotiated the price a little,’ Steiner added.

‘Now it only costs 1,300 Swiss Francs ($1,337/£1,090) to spend the night in the shop window.’

The team had not anticipated her presence and had to hustle to complete all of the necessary preparations.

‘We created a scaffolding out of battens and pushed it up as a wall,’ Steiner explained. Otherwise, that would be a little odd.’

A tiny office space is included with the window and has a sleek and modern appearance.

It also features panoramic views of the car parks on both sides of the street, as well as mid-century contemporary furniture and a television.

The shop was keen to avoid being mistaken for the type of window bedrooms found in Amsterdam’s or Hamburg’s red light areas.
