According to India Today, Canada will be the first country to print a health warning on each cigarette to curb this harmful habit.
The decision was made after the government two decades ago imposed graphic graphics on cigarette boxes, which became a worldwide trend.
“We need to address the fear that these messages may have lost their novelty, and to some extent, we worry that they may have lost their impact as well,” Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Carolyn Bennett said.
The consultation period for the change will begin on Saturday, with the Canadian government hoping to implement it by the second half of 2023.
“Notably health warnings on individual tobacco products would assist ensure that these important messages reach individuals, including youngsters, who frequently access cigarettes one at a time in social circumstances, ignoring the information printed on the packaging,” says the report “Bennet said.
The current warning proposal is “poison in every puff.”
Rob Cunningham, a senior policy analyst with the Canadian Cancer Society, hoped the message would be heard around the world. “It’s a warning you can’t afford to ignore.” With every puff, it will reach every smoker “Cunningham added.
