On Saturday morning, US President Joe Biden was riding his bicycle near his seaside home in Delaware when he fell, but he was unharmed.

The 79-year-old president was seen instantly standing up following his fall, according to a White House pool report. “I’m fine,” he says later.

He had stopped to talk to passersby while biking with First Lady Jill Biden in a state park near their beach house in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

The president admitted to a small audience of well-wishers and reporters that he had lost his balance while attempting to free a foot from a bike clip.

The result was “a mad scramble of Secret Service and journalists,” according to a White House pool report, which also stated that no obvious scrapes or bruises were sustained as a result of the fall.

“There is no need for medical attention,” a White House official said. “The President anticipates spending the remainder of the day with his family.”

As the oldest US president, Biden’s health is constantly scrutinized, especially as speculation grows about whether he will seek re-election in 2024.

Biden broke his foot while playing with his pet German shepherds in November 2020, shortly after his election but before starting office.

Biden’s doctor granted him a clean bill of health a year later, in November 2021, characterizing him as “healthy” and “vigorous.”

Biden said he was “in the process of making up my mind” about reducing some Trump-era tariffs on Chinese imports in order to reduce inflationary pressures when he took a few questions from reporters on Saturday.

He stated that he would shortly speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

When asked if he was content with progress on gun legislation in the wake of mass killings in Texas and New York, Biden answered only that he was pleased with his home state of Delaware’s action, which included a ban on assault-style weapons.
