According to state media on Tuesday, a court in the military-run nation of Myanmar sentenced ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional six years in prison after finding her guilty on four additional counts of corruption.

The Nobel laureate has now been sentenced to 17 years in prison after a string of secret trials, and the latest decision comes as the UN’s Special Envoy on Myanmar visited the nation on Monday to discuss the “deteriorating (rights) situation.”

Suu Kyi, who aged 77 in June, has already been convicted of a number of crimes, including bribery and election irregularities.
According to the Myanmar News Agency, Suu Kyi was convicted on Monday for allegations of abusing money from a charity to construct a home and leasing public land (MNA).

Suu Kyi, who has refuted all accusations against her, is being detained in solitary confinement at a prison in the nation’s capital, Naypyitaw.

International rights organisations and world leaders have voiced alarm over the deterioration of Myanmar’s human rights situation and have criticised Suu Kyi’s ongoing trials as “unfair and unjust.”

According to Elaine Pearson, interim Asia director at Human Rights Watch (HRW), “The Myanmar military junta’s unfair conviction and imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi is part of its deliberate attack on human rights throughout the country.”

According to Pearson, “the military’s propensity to forcibly vanish the nation’s prominent civilian leader indicates the harshness that lesser-known political prisoners experience.”
