North Korea fired two cruise missiles: South Korea
According to a representative of the South Korean Defense Ministry, North Korea launched two cruise missiles early on Wednesday morning from the coastal town of Onchon into the waters off its west coast.
Military representatives from South Korea and the US said they were investigating the launch for more information.
According to the presidential office, South Korea’s national security adviser conducted a meeting following the launch to evaluate the security environment and the readiness of the military.
Before joint military drills between the US and South Korea, scheduled for early next week, the conference participants agreed to closely monitor any associated movements, the office said.
The last time North Korea fired a cruise missile was in January, despite restrictions imposed by the UN.
Cruise missiles are harder to detect than ballistic missiles because they are propelled by jet engines and maintain a closer proximity to the ground. The majority of cruise missiles aren’t built to transport nuclear warheads.
The launch took place just before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol gave a speech to commemorate his 100th day in office.
During the speech, he reiterated his willingness to offer North Korea aid in exchange for its agreement to stop developing nuclear weapons and begin the denuclearization process.
In separate statements earlier this week, Yoon also alluded to a “audacious initiative” to strengthen North Korea’s economy in exchange for denuclearization. In May, during his inauguration speech, he made the initial offer.
