Famous Kenyan police officer faces murder charges

• Corporal Ahmed Rashid will be charged with murder in connection with two murders.
• The killings occurred in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi in March of 2017.
• Corporal Rashid used social media to issue warnings to those whom he thought had broken the law.

A Kenyan police officer will be charged with murder after video captured on a mobile phone in 2017 showed him shooting and killing two men.

The video helped the officer achieve popularity.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), which is Kenya’s equivalent of a police oversight agency, has announced that it has received a summons for Corporal Ahmed Rashid in connection with two homicides that occurred in broad daylight in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi in March of 2017.

However, he has not commented as of yet.

It is common knowledge that Corporal Rashid used several social media channels to issue warnings to those whom he thought had broken the law.

After conducting their investigation for a number of months, the IPOA ultimately decided to charge him.

It was claimed that Corporal Rashid was a member of a group of police officers known as the Pangani Six.

This group of policemen garnered both admiration and condemnation from Kenyans for the way in which they dealt with criminal groups in the city.

The police stand accused of carrying out killings outside of the proper legal channels.

The decision to press charges against him was made a few weeks after the government revealed that it was disbanding a special unit that had been accused of murdering, torturing, extorting, and kidnapping scores of Kenyans.

Eleven cops from the unit are being held accountable in court on numerous allegations, including one related to the disappearance in July of two Indian nationals and their driver.
