The Israeli military announced on Thursday that the body of a young Israeli Druze man who had been kidnapped by Palestinian gunmen in Jenin had been delivered to his family and that nothing in exchange had been given.

“We didn’t negotiate in any way with the gunmen that had the body,” an IDF spokesperson said during a briefing. “We didn’t give anything in return. I think at some point they understood that the consequences for this happening would have been very hard for the Jenin economy.”

According to officials on both sides of the conflict, gunmen raided a hospital in Jenin and took Tiran Ferro’s body after he died in a car accident in the West Bank. According to the gunmen, the remains of Palestinians murdered by Israeli forces must be returned.

Following the body’s seizure on Wednesday, Israel closed the routes leading into and out of Jenin; following its return on Thursday, it reopened them.

Governor of Jenin Maj. Gen. Akram Rajoub told media that security authorities from the Palestinian Authority had mediated talks with the assailants holding the body.

“The PA General Intelligence Service had contacts with one of the kidnappers, which facilitated the body’s return to the General Intelligence Service headquarters in Jenin,” Rajoub said.

Whether Ferro was alive or dead when assailants stormed into his Jenin hospital room and removed his body is up for debate.

On Wednesday, Ferro’s father told Israeli media that the teen was still alive and had been taken off of life support. Ferro was already dead, according to interview with Jenin Governor Akram Rajoub.

“When we were in the hospital, we were standing in front of the intensive care unit,” recalled Ferro’s father. My youngster had a heartbeat and was attached to the ventilator. I was in the room with my brother and my son when a group of 20 masked men barged in, screaming. We could have done nothing but watch as it happened.

“They kidnapped the body in front of my eyes,” Ferro’s father told reporters on camera.

In a statement acquired by media on Wednesday, the Jenin Brigade, a Palestinian militant group located in a West Bank refugee camp, claimed to be in possession of Ferro’s body and demanded Israel turn over any other Palestinians murdered by the IDF that were in Israel’s control. Additionally, the group claimed that in preparation for Israeli forces invading the Jenin camp, it had increased the level of alertness among its members.

If Tiran Ferro’s body was not returned, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid pledged that “the kidnappers would pay a harsh price”: Israel has demonstrated recently that it is capable of reaching any location and any terrorist.

Ferro will celebrate his 18th birthday on Thursday, according to Lapid. Community elders told media that he belonged to the minority group of Druze.
