A coroner has determined that the four University of Idaho students were stabbed in their beds almost a week after they were discovered dead in their rental home.

According to Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt, the three young women and young man were likely asleep when they were attacked on Sunday, November 13.

She said that they had been stabbed numerous times with a “very hefty knife.”

Police in Moscow, a college town, have issued a warning that the killer may still be a threat because no arrests have been made.

With help from the FBI and Idaho State Police, more than 25 detectives are engaged in the inquiry.

The victims were identified as roommates Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Xana Kernodle, 20, all of Coeur d’Alene, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington, was Ms Kernodle’s boyfriend.

After police were alerted by a call to emergency services, the victims were discovered dead on Sunday afternoon. Two other people in the house were found unharmed.

“We cannot say that there is no threat to the community,” Moscow Police Chief James Fry said.

“We still believe it’s a targeted attack. But the reality is there still is a person out there who committed four very horrible, horrible crimes.”

Speaking to cable news channel , the coroner said: “It has to be somebody pretty angry in order to stab four people to death.”

According to the Moscow Police Department, none of the victims showed symptoms of sexual assault, even though some of them had defensive wounds.

Additionally, nothing seems to have been taken from the victims or the home, according to CBS News, and there were no indications of a forced entry.

The first police officers on the site discovered a door open.

The weapon is still being sought after, and authorities are checking the contents of adjacent trash cans and contacting nearby businesses to see if they recently sold fixed-blade knives.

All four victims had left for the night on Saturday – the couple to a party, and the other two ladies to a local bar – but had returned by 01:45 (09:45 GMT) on Sunday. Police have asked the public for assistance in the inquiry.

Ms. Goncalves and Ms. Mogen are seen in CCTV footage from a takeaway truck on Moscow’s Main Street taking pictures with their phones and conversing with friends before they hail a cab home.

A murder hadn’t occurred in Moscow, a picturesque Panhandle town of 25,000 people located around 80 miles (130 km) south of Spokane, Washington, in the previous five years.

Among tributes paid to the victims were a message from the Mad Greek restaurant, where Ms Mogen and Ms Kernodle had worked as servers, and Ms Mogen had been “the face behind” its social media.

“It is with a broken heart and deep sadness to share with you that we have lost two of our own here at Mad Greek,” the restaurant posted on Facebook. “Xana and Maddie… brought so much joy to our restaurant and all of those they encountered.”

On November 30, the university will hold a candlelight memorial in memory of the four victims.
