Burkina Faso‘s mines minister refuted Ghana’s claim that his country gave Russian mercenaries a mine.

“We have not awarded any permit to a Russian company in southern Burkina,” Mines Minister Simon Pierre Boussim told reporters on Tuesday.

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo sparked controversy by saying Burkina Faso recruited Russian mercenaries to fight armed non-state entities.

Akufo-Addo said a mine in southern Burkina was given to them as recompense for their services during the US-Africa Summit.

Burkina Faso’s administration has neither confirmed nor denied a deal with Wagner, but it summoned the Ghanaian ambassador to explain the president’s remarks.

“We compiled a list of all the exploitation or research licenses for huge industrial mines in the south,” Boussim stated.

The Burkinabe government recently awarded Russian corporation Nordgold fresh exploration permission for a gold mine in Yimiougou, but the company has been engaged in Burkina Faso for more than 10 years.

Mali contracted Wagner to fight armed groups in the Sahel last year. France and the U.S. are concerned about the group’s expansion into Africa because they allege it exploits mineral resources and violates human rights.
