More than eight million unregistered Sim cards were disabled across the country after their owners missed a last registration deadline, stated Ghanaian officials.

Due to the disconnecting of the mobile lines, the owners will no longer be able to utilize mobile money services, make calls, or access the internet.

The National Communications Authority and Ghana’s Ministry of Communication and Digitization had stated that the requirement for Sim card registration was done to combat crimes like fraud and to protect online security.

The procedure got under way in October of last year when the government ordered citizens to register their mobile connections.

Mobile phone users must first link their Sim cards with the information on their national identification cards as part of the registration process.

Mobile phone service providers will then register them after collecting their biometric data from them.

The due date had been postponed numerous times.

The most recent date was November 30.

It is challenging to register their Sim cards because a substantial portion of Ghana‘s 31 million people lack a national identity card.

According to the authorities, almost 20 million lines have been fully registered as of this point. Ten Sim cards at most may be registered on an individual’s national ID card.
