The Israeli military announced Wednesday it was temporarily pulling a unit of ultra-Orthodox soldiers from the occupied West Bank after a 78-year-old Palestinian American died during an arrest earlier this year.

The Netzah Yehuda (Judea Forever) Battalion will be transferred by the end of the year.Omar Assad died after being arrested, shackled, and blindfolded by Israeli soldiers.

It stated the decision was made to “diversify operational deployment in numerous places and gain operational experience.” The unit will return to the West Bank next year.

Netzah Yehuda is an ultra-Orthodox unit. The unit was founded to recruit religious men, who are excused from military duty. Members have been accused of abuse.

Netzah Yehuda bound and blindfolded Assad at a checkpoint in January. Unbound, they left him facedown in an abandoned building.

The elderly Palestinian guy, who had lived in the US for 40 years, was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. When he died wasn’t clear.

Palestinian doctors observed bruising on Assad’s skull, redness on his bound wrists, and bleeding in his eyelids.

After a US government uproar, the Israeli military called the incident “a tragic and unfortunate event stemming from moral failure and poor decision-making by the soldiers.” One cop was disciplined and two were reassigned over the incident.
