Although neither party has acknowledged the amount, the corporation is reportedly asking the council for £1.2m to reimburse its expenditures.

The local council had already given warnings about its financial predicament and was already seeking to cut costs before establishing its annual budget the following year.

Julie Craig, a cabinet member for highways and transportation, was fired in March by council leader Mary Lanigan after her agency ordered the enlargement of the parking lot.

Patrick Rice, the director of the council for adults and communities, has looked into the incident, including the authority’s policies and practices, but the results have not been made public.

Additionally, the Environment Agency is looking into what transpired.

Where environmental violations have taken place, it has the authority to bring legal action, with possible jail time or astronomical fines as penalties for pollution spills.
