A Republican congressman-elect George Santos who admitted to lying about his education and employment history is being investigated in New York.

George Santos’s resume has “many fabrications and discrepancies,” according to the Republican district attorney for Nassau County, who said she will check into them.

His backstory was first accused as having inconsistencies in a New York Times article published last week.

The induction of Mr. Santos is slated for January 3.

This month, the newspaper released an investigation that claimed Mr. Santos, who won a seat in Congress in the midterm elections held in November, had lied about a number of things on his resume.

He worked at renowned Wall Street companies Goldman Sachs and Citigroup after receiving his degree from New York’s Baruch College.

Earlier this week, Mr. Santos acknowledged that he had lied on his resume about having graduated from college and that he had never worked directly for either company.

He expressed his “embarrassment” at having deceived.

Regarding accusations he had misrepresented his Jewish ancestry, he told the New York Post in an interview published on Monday that he was Catholic and never claimed to be Jewish but when “I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish'”.

Mr. Santos said he was “not a criminal” and said that the scandal would not prevent him from serving his two-year term in the House of Representatives.

“My sins here are embellishing my resume,” Mr. Santos told the Post. “I’m sorry.”

On Wednesday, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said residents of Mr. Santos’ congressional district in New York “must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress”.

No one “is above the law and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it”.

A source informed , a US partner of the reputed media outlet , and other US media that prosecutors from the US attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York have also started a separate federal investigation.

According to Media outlet, they are investigating his financial situation and financial reports. It is not yet a “formal investigation,” according to News Agency.

Along with problems with his background, Mr. Santos has had to explain how he was able to give his campaign $700,000 (£575,000).

Letitia James, the attorney general of New York, was reportedly “looking into” some of the concerns expressed regarding Mr. Santos, according to US media sites.

Mr. Santos was chosen to represent a district that includes sections of Queens and Nassau County on Long Island.

A request for comment on the probes did not receive an instant response from him.

Since the controversy began, he has come under increasing pressure to resign, notably from Republican leaders, but he has consistently stated that he is still determined to finishing his term.
