When a ‘rogue wave’ struck their cruise ship earlier this week during a storm, one guest was murdered and four others were injured.
The Viking Polaris was carrying people on an Antarctic trip when the storm struck it as it approached Ushuaia, Argentina, late on Tuesday night.
A large wave from the storm smashed many panes of glass on the cruise liner, which then crashed over an American passenger and killed her.
The US National Ocean Service classifies a “rogue wave” as being “more than twice the magnitude of surrounding waves,” and Viking Cruises confirmed this in a statement released on Saturday.
“It is with great sadness that we confirmed a guest passed away following the incident,” Viking Cruises said.
The name and country of origin of the traveler were not disclosed.
However, the Argentine state news agency said the dead passenger was an American woman who “received blows from a glass surface that collapsed in the middle of the storm.”
“Four other guests sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and were treated by the ship’s onboard doctor and medical staff,” Viking said.
The cruise line says it is looking into it and has postponed the next voyage of the Viking Polaris, which was planned to depart from December 5 to 17.
According to Viking Cruises, the incident only caused “minimal damage” to the boat, which arrived in Argentina on Wednesday.
Rogue waves, according to the US National Ocean Service, are “extremely unpredictable” and frequently arrive suddenly from directions other than those of the prevailing wind and waves.
