Six Ukrainian embassies in Europe have received packages containing animal eyes, according to the country’s foreign ministry.

The items were discovered in Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, and Austria, according to spokesman Oleg Nikolenko.

Who delivered the goods to the consulates and embassies remains unknown.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, there is a “well-planned campaign of terror and intimidation of Ukrainian embassies and consulates.”

An employee was hurt two days ago at the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid, Spain, when a letter bomb detonated. This is only one of several claimed occurrences.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Mr. Nikolenko made reference to a number of such incidents, including the fact that the Ukrainian ambassador to the Vatican’s office building’s entrance had also been vandalized.

Additionally, the embassy in Kazakhstan has received a hoax bomb threat, while the embassy in the USA has received a letter with a photocopy of an article that is critical of Ukraine, he continued.

“The letter came synchronously with others from the territory of one European country,” Mr. Nikolenko said. “Ukraine is working with foreign law enforcers to investigate all the threats, identify those implicated and bring them to account.”

The six packages delivered to the European embassies and consuls, he added, “were impregnated with a liquid of characteristic colour and had a corresponding smell”.

In addition, Mr. Nikolenko claimed that Ukrainian consulates and embassies have increased security precautions as a result of Dmytro Kuleba’s directives following the Madrid bombing.

Around 13:00 local time, the Spanish police said they got a complaint about the explosion (12:00 GMT). Nobody has claimed responsibility for the explosion as of yet, and it is unknown whether the occurrences are connected.

Later on Wednesday evening, a second “suspicious postal shipment” was intercepted at the headquarters of military equipment firm Instalaza in Zaragoza, the interior ministry said.

Following that, letter bombs were delivered to the defence ministry and an air base in Torrejon de Ardoz, a town outside of Madrid, on Thursday morning.

The US embassy also received another device.

“The characteristics of the envelopes, as well as their content, are similar in the five cases,” Spain’s Secretary of State of Security, Rafael Perez, told journalists.

“There are signs that indicate that the letters came from Spanish territory, but I insist we must be prudent…we are at the beginning of the investigation.”
