A woman who was responsible for the death of her infant child, who was just one year old and had been left alone while she ran errands, was sentenced to two years in prison for her actions.

When 35-year-old Stacey Davis from Melksham in Wiltshire returned home in June 2018, she discovered the lifeless body of the boy, who was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

An investigation was conducted, but it was unable to determine the reason for the death.

The actions of Davis, according to the Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker of the Wiltshire Police, “fell well below the duty she owed to him.”

After reviewing the evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service decided to proceed with the charges, which include two counts of child cruelty.

Davis, who lives on Caretakers Close, pleaded guilty to those charges as well as one count of possessing cannabis on Thursday at the Salisbury Crown Court and was sentenced to imprisonment.

“I would like to offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of this young boy,” said Det Ch Insp Phil Walker, who works in the major crime investigation team for the Wiltshire Police.

“The actions that Davis took on the day that her son passed away fell far short of the duty that she owed to him as his mother. She should have loved him, cared for him, and put his welfare first, as any loving and doting parent would do.

It has been more than four years since he passed away, and I am aware that this has been an extremely trying time for all of those who were close to him and loved him.

“The investigation team has worked tirelessly on what has been a challenging and extremely upsetting case,” and it is thanks to their efforts that the investigation has now been carried out to its natural conclusion.
