14 killed in Mexico prison attack, hundreds escapes
Officials said that at least 14 people were killed in a daring armed assault on a prison in the city of Juarez, which is located in Mexico and is a border city.
According to a statement released by the Office of the Attorney General for the State of Chihuahua, there were a total of 13 people injured in addition to the deaths of 10 security personnel and four convicts.
According to the office of the prosecutor, the incident started at 7 a.m. (9 a.m. ET) on Sunday when gunmen in armored vehicles arrived at the prison and opened fire on security employees. They fled the scene shortly after.
According to the authorities, 24 detainees were able to flee the facility by taking advantage of the situation.
There was an initial lack of clarity regarding the perpetrator(s) of the incident.
One of the most dangerous cities in Mexico and a hub of drug cartel violence, Ciudad Juarez is located just on the other side of the international border from El Paso, Texas, in the United States.
Rival drug cartels in Juarez and Sinaloa have been engaged in a brutal turf war in the region over lucrative smuggling routes and for control of drug-dealing territories in the city of Ciudad Juarez.
The violence that occurred at the prison on Sunday was not the first time that violence has erupted there. After a conflict between the two gangs in August of last year led to a riot and shootouts that resulted in the deaths of 11 people, hundreds of Mexican troops were dispatched to the area.
