A Palestinian youngster, age 13, was responsible for the shooting that occurred in Jerusalem on Saturday, according to Israeli authorities.

A father and kid were gravely hurt, and the perpetrator was shot by onlookers and is currently being treated in a hospital.

It happened the day after a shooting at a synagogue in East Jerusalem left seven people dead and at least three more hurt.

In relation to the attack on Friday, 42 persons have been detained by police.

A spokeswoman for the Israeli police described the event that happened on Saturday and took place in the Silwan neighborhood outside of Jerusalem’s Old City, saying the attacker ambushed five people as they were heading to prayer and left two of them in “serious condition.”

“This is a significant rise in the level of terror,” said Dean Elsdunne, adding that the “terrorist” is being treated in hospital.

In response to the two attacks, authorities have positioned officers from a counter-terrorism unit “permanently” in the Jerusalem area to “promptly respond to exceptional events whenever necessary”.

The man who attacked the synagogue on Friday was identified by local media as a Palestinian from East Jerusalem, who police described as a “terrorist”.

Speaking at the scene of the attack on Friday, Israeli police commissioner Kobi Shabtai called it “one of the worst attacks we have encountered in recent years”.

At around 20:15 local time, the assailant started fire on Israeli worshippers who had gathered for prayers at the start of the Jewish Sabbath in a synagogue in the city’s Neve Yaakov neighborhood (18:15 GMT).

According to the police, policemen then fatally shot him.

While not claiming responsibility for the incident, Palestinian militant factions applauded it.

Since nine Palestinians, including terrorists and civilians, were killed on Thursday during an Israeli military assault in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, tensions have been particularly high.

Following this, Gaza started firing rockets into Israel, to which Israel retaliated with airstrikes.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, which honors the six million Jews and other victims who perished in the Holocaust at the hands of the Nazi regime in Germany, the synagogue shooting took place.
