On Wednesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva fired 13 more military personnel from the National Protection Advisor’s office, which is in charge of the president’s security.

As a result of Lula’s criticism of the military for failing to intervene when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro seized government buildings on January 8, 40 military personnel were expelled from the Alvorada presidential house on Tuesday.

After what had occurred, the Marxist president questioned how he could continue to entrust the military with his personal security.

According to government authorities, the Federal Police will now be in charge of ensuring Lula’s safety.

Prior to the rebellion in which a large number of Bolsonaro supporters entered and looted the Congress building, the Planalto presidential offices, and the Supreme Court, Lula had expressed his suspicion that “people in the Armed Forces” were involved.

The protesters demanded a military takeover to remove Lula and reinstate the far-right populist leader in retaliation for Bolsonaro’s defeat in the elections in October.

The violence brought to mind the assault on the US Capitol by followers of the late President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021.
