China has responded to allegations that it was withholding statistics by reporting roughly 60,000 deaths among Covid victims, since early December.

The National Health Commission said on Saturday that the “emergency peak” of COVID-19’s most recent spike seemed to have passed, and that the total number of fatalities from December 8 through Thursday was 54,435 overall and 5,503 due to respiratory failure brought on by COVID-19.

It stated that the documented COVID-19 deaths happened in hospitals, leaving open the possibility that more persons could have passed away at home.

The report would increase to 10,775 the official number of deaths in China directly attributed to COVID-19 since the virus was discovered in late 2019 in the central city of Wuhan.

In spite of an increase in infections that started in October and has packed hospitals with feverish, wheezing patients, China abruptly lifted anti-virus regulations in December and stopped releasing data on COVID-19 deaths and infections.

Hundreds of millions of individuals in China may have contracted the virus, according to reports from local and provincial administrations, prompting the World Health Organization and other nations to make an information request to China.

Based on a drop in the number of people visiting fever clinics, the peak of the most recent wave of infections appeared to have passed, according to National Health Commission official Jiao Yahui.

According to Jiao, the number of patients visiting those clinics every day had peaked at 2.9 million on December 23 and had dropped by 83 percent to 477,000 by Thursday.

China has previously reported little more than 5,000 fatalities since the epidemic started, one of the lowest fatality rates in the world.

However, international health experts have forecast that at least one million COVID-related deaths will occur this year.

According to the report, more than 90% of those who passed away had cancer, heart, lung, or kidney issues.

Since the increase in instances started last month, the governments of the United States, South Korea, and other nations have mandated COVID-19 testing and other controls on people travelling from China.

Beijing replied on Wednesday by stopping the issuance of new visas to visitors from South Korea and Japan.

The most populous country in the world, China, used a “zero-COVID” approach that intended to isolate every case to keep its infection rate and mortality rate lower than those of the United States and many other nations at the height of the pandemic.

Millions of people were kept at home by the measure, which also caused irate rallies and closed off entry to some cities.
