After becoming caught in a rip current in the ocean at Holywell Bay, a father and son were rescued by a surf lifeguard who was not on duty.

The 39-year-old man drowned after getting into the water to assist his son, 10, who was body boarding at Holywell Bay, Cornwall, on Saturday.

The local surf lifesaving club’s female member entered the ocean and pulled the guy and youngster to shore.

According to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), a coastguard helicopter provided transport for the individual to a hospital.

It continued that the youngster, who was donning a wetsuit, was unharmed.

A spokesperson said: “The air and water temperature were hovering around just 10C and the man, who was not wearing a wetsuit, developed suspected hypothermia and needed onward medical care.

In a Facebook post, Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club chairman Steve Peck expressed the club’s “very proudness” of Emily Greenwood, who performed the rescue.

He said: “From everyone at the club I’d like to thank Emily for her courage, her determination and her instinctive, selfless actions which, in this case undoubtedly saved two lives.”
