Before travelling to the US to meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the foreign secretary declared that the UK and its friends in North America “stand together against Putin’s unlawful aggression.”

As Foreign Secretary James Cleverly embarks on a two-day trip to the US and Canada, Ukraine is expected to be at the top of the agenda.

“The UK, US, and Canada always have each other’s backs when it counts, preserving the rules-based system for nearly 80 years,” Mr. Cleverly said in remarks made prior to his departure.

“Today we stand together against Putin’s unlawful aggression, and we will keep using our incredibly strong defence and security ties to ensure that, ultimately, the Ukrainian people will prevail,” he concluded.

Before meetings with his US colleague Secretary of State Antony Blinken, he will give a major address at Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies outlining Britain’s foreign policy aims. After that, the two will conduct a joint press conference.

British tanks, artillery pieces, and armoured vehicles will be supplied to Ukraine, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace declared on Monday.

Mr. Cleverly plans to leverage this British commitment to convince the United States and Canada to follow the UK’s example.

He is anticipated to emphasise how urgently the Ukrainians must be provided with the appropriate combat equipment if they are to win the conflict.

Over the past 11 months, the Americans have sent billions of dollars’ worth of weapons to Ukraine, but only in discrete, low-capability deliveries out of concern over aggravating Russia.

As Russia gets ready to launch a new onslaught, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has stated that he is committed to further up the UK’s diplomatic and military support for Ukraine.

This week, senior members of President Biden’s staff are meeting with President Zelenskyy in the Ukrainian capital.

Following talks in Germany and Poland where they discussed sustaining US assistance for Ukraine, Wendy Sherman, Antony Blinken’s deputy, Dr. Colin Kahl, the undersecretary of defence for policy, and Jon Finer, the main deputy national security adviser, are now all in Kyiv.

Beyond Ukraine, the British government aims to discuss with Americans in Washington the elusive UK-US trade agreement.
Mr. Cleverly will speak about British efforts to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a significant free trade agreement involving 11 nations, including Canada, on Wednesday in Toronto.

Although Britain has completed the final stage of CPTPP membership, there are still differences on the amount of market access that the current members would have to Britain.
The topic of Northern Ireland will likely come up during the conversation between Mr. Cleverly and Mr. Blinken. The UK will look to the US for assistance as speculation grows that an EU-UK deal on the Brexit Northern Ireland Protocol may be imminent.

President Biden has expressed a keen interest in the discussions surrounding Northern Ireland and made it plain that how the UK handles the situation may have an impact on the likelihood of a US-UK trade agreement.
