Before Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva becomes president, large crowds are assembling in the Brazilian capital city of Brasilia.

The well-known left-wing politician Lula, who served as president from 2003 and 2010, also defeated Jair Bolsonaro in the election of October.

Due to concerns that Bolsonaro supporters may attempt to interrupt the ceremony on Sunday, there will be strict security.

Bolsonaro himself won’t be there because he left Brazil on Friday.

Early in the morning, a sea of Lula fans gathered in front of Congress, dressed in the red of his Workers’ Party. They travelled for both a celebration and to witness their leader being sworn in.

On two enormous stages covered in the country’s flag, more than 60 performers, including Samba icon Martinho da Vila, are scheduled to take the stage as part of the “Lulapalooza” music event.

“Love has won over hate,” read one banner carried by a man dressed as Lula – complete with a presidential sash.

“Brazil needed this change, this transformation,” said another backer of the incoming leader as she queued for Sunday’s festivities.

Juliana Barreto – who is from Lula’s home state Pernambuco – told the Media that her country was “a disaster” previously.

At 17:30 GMT, formal events will get underway when Geraldo Alckmin, the new vice president, and Lula ride around the city in an open-top convertible.
