Week 4 of 2022 NFL season: Lessons from 49ers’ victory against Rams
Week 4 of 2022 NFL season: Lessons from 49ers' victory against Rams....
NFL game is called off after player collapses on the field. Safety Sam Hamlin seemed to be struck in the chest by Bengals receiver Tee Higgins’ helmet as he tackled Higgins. He got to his feet, then tripped and landed on his back.
According to ESPN, medical personnel gave CPR to Hamlin on the field for more than 10 minutes and gave him oxygen while he was taken away on a stretcher.
The source added that Hamlin’s family members who were there at the game travelled to the neighbouring hospital with him in the ambulance.
During the procedure, players from both teams gathered around Hamlin. Many were observed bowing in prayer, many were seen to be clearly upset, and some were seen to be crying.
The Cincinnati audience was silent during the ordeal, and television coverage frequently cut away from the action on the field.
About an hour after the event, the organisers decided to formally call off the game for the evening. Rarely are NFL games postponed due to injuries.
A source told local sports reporter Joe Danneman that the Bills will leave Cincinnati and fly back to their home city of New York. It implies that the game might not start up again soon.
The matchup between the two teams, who are two of the top Super Bowl hopefuls this year, will take place on a Monday night in prime time during the last week of the NFL’s regular season.
In a statement, the league’s players association stated: “Players from the Bengals and Bills as well as the NFL have been in contact with us. At this point, just Damar’s health and wellbeing are important.”
Before being selected by the Bills in the NFL draught of 2021, Hamlin, a native of McKees Rock, Pennsylvania, excelled at the University of Pittsburgh.
He was a safety who mostly filled in as a reserve for the Bills last season, but he started for them in 2022.
Additionally, he has received recognition for organising yearly Christmas toy drives in his hometown ever since he was an amateur athlete.
After Hamlin’s collapse on Monday, a GoFundMe page for the toy drive was reshared and has since raised almost $1 million.
Greetings have also flooded in from a wide range of sources. Defensive end JJ Watt of the Arizona Cardinals tweeted: “Please, just be fine. Ryan Clark, a former safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, said on ESPN’s SportsCenter: “This isn’t about a football player, this is about a human. Please be okay.”
Kathy Hochul, governor of New York, said: “wishing Damar Hamlin well. Our thoughts are with his family, close friends, and the Buffalo Bills organisation as a whole.”
