Sydney: bull sharks maul a dolphin, 2 Sydney beaches close
South wales: According to Surf Life Saving New South Wales, two popular Sydney beaches were closed Saturday after swimmers witnessed several bull sharks attacking a dolphin.
Several surfing and Ironman and Ironwoman events were canceled as a result of the closures.
According to the organization, the dolphin suffered tail injuries and was later euthanized.
Lifeguards closed Manly and Shelly beaches, where hundreds of people had gathered for the Manly Open Classic, a community event that included Ironman competitions scheduled for Saturday.
“Surf lifesavers and lifeguards removed swimmers from the water, and a large surf carnival was canceled,” the organization said in a statement.
Surf Life Saving said its drones spotted a number of sharks in the area.
Emily Pettersson, a surfer, said she went into the water when she heard the dolphin had been injured.
“[The dolphin’s] fin was mangled, you could see it was falling off, and it also had a bite mark on the side of the body,” Pettersson said, adding that she wasn’t afraid to go in the water herself.
“We’ve had a large shark activity in a nearby area… and we’ve had to pause our entire event… “We’ve been in a holding pattern, but we’ll be canceling the event today,” he said.
Goulding also stated that the organizers will refund the entries and have promised to implement additional protocols to mitigate such risks in future events, such as having a backup location.
