A court heard that a pedestrian Auriol Grey killed a 77-year-old cyclist who had “angered” her by standing on the pavement.

Auriol Grey, 49, is charged with making “hostile and violent gestures” towards Celia Ward, who fell off her bike on October 20, 2020, into the path of a car in Huntingdon.

According to testimony given at Peterborough Crown Court, Ms. Grey yelled at Mrs. Ward to get off the sidewalk while using an expletive.

Ms. Grey, of Huntingdon’s Bradbury Place, disputes the charge of manslaughter.

Simon Spence KC, who began the prosecution’s case, stated that the two had been driving in opposing directions on the ring road of the Cambridgeshire town that afternoon.

He said jurors would hear from Mrs. Ward’s husband who said his wife was an “experienced and competent cyclist”.

Mr. Spence claimed that the event was recorded on sound-capable CCTV film, and that Ms. Grey can be heard yelling “get off the [expletive] pavement” before Mrs. Ward gets off her bike.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant was “angry by a cyclist’s presence on a pavement.”

Ms. Grey “gestured in a hostile and aggressive way towards” Mrs. Ward, he claimed, leading her to fall off the bike and into the road where she was struck by an approaching automobile, though it was unclear from the video if there was any physical contact.

After seeing the CCTV tape, the jury was informed that the car had “no chance to stop or take avoiding action.”

Mrs. Ward was not wearing a helmet, according to Mr. Spence, but even if she had, “given the damage she experienced, nothing would have saved her life.”

The court was informed that Ms. Grey fled the area before emergency personnel arrived and went to Sainsbury’s to buy goods.

The defendant, who has cerebral palsy and serious vision problems, informed investigators that she did not think she had any mental disabilities, according to the court.

The trial goes on.
