Kabul professor arrested to protest against Taliban ban on women’s education

A Kabul lecturer who tore up his degrees live on Afghan television in protest of the Taliban’s prohibition on women attending colleges and universities has been detained.

The man, Ismail Mashal, is a lecturer at Kabul University as well as the founder of the exclusive Mashal University in Kabul.

During an on-camera interview for the nation’s Tolo News in December, he tore up the diplomas while crying and speaking with a trembling voice.

“I no longer require these certificates as of today since education in this nation is not valued. I don’t accept this education if my mother and sister can’t study, he stated at the time.

He clarified that the certificates were his original, various Master’s and Doctorate degrees.

The video of his performance quickly gained popularity and was reposted by Shabnam Nasimi, a former policy adviser to the UK-based Minister for Refugees and Afghan Resettlement.

Nasimi tweeted the video along with the caption, “Amazing images as a Kabul university professor smashes his certificates on live TV in Afghanistan.”

Abdul Haq Hammad, a senior Taliban spokesperson, claimed last week that Mashal had already been detained.

On December 20, the Taliban said that all female students’ access to higher education had been halted. In March of this year, the government banned girls from attending secondary school.

It also follows the imposition of numerous other restrictions on women’s freedoms, such as those pertaining to their access to public areas. All parks in Kabul were closed to women in November. In Kabul, a Taliban official made the announcement that women would not be allowed to use gyms there.

According to Taliban regulations, women must likewise cover their heads in public and wear modest clothing.
