Gary Glitter, a disgraced former pop star, was released from prison after completing half of his 16-year sentence.

Glitter, 78, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was given a sentence in 2015 for one count of having sex with a girl under 13 as well as four charges of attempted rape.

He was a prominent musical figure in the 1970s.

Police will closely observe Gadd, a justice ministry spokeswoman told the Media.

According to the Media, he will be given a GPS tag.

When Gadd attacked two girls, 12 and 13, he was at the height of his career. He had invited them to his dressing room backstage.

In 1975, he attempted to rape his youngest victim, who was less than ten years old at the time.

Gadd had been detained at Portland, Dorset’s HMP The Verne, a category C low security prison. He was automatically released halfway through his sentence because he was given a fixed-term sentence.

His youngest victim had been less than 10 years old when he crept into her bed and tried to rape her in 1975.

Gadd had been held at HMP The Verne – a low security category C jail in Portland, Dorset. Having received a fixed-term sentence, he was automatically freed halfway through his term.

When Gadd was the first person detained as part of Operation Yewtree, the investigation the Met began in 2012 following the Jimmy Savile scandal, the accusations that led to his detention came to light.

Det Ch Insp Michael Orchard, from Operation Yewtree, said Gadd was a “habitual sexual predator who took advantage of the star status afforded to him”.

Gadd, performing as Gary Glitter, was one of the UK‘s biggest glam rock stars of the 1970s, with three UK number ones, including I’m the Leader of the Gang (I am!).

His fall from grace occurred decades later, after he admitted possessing thousands of images that showed child sex abuse and was jailed for four months in 1999.

After being freed he went abroad, and in 2002 was expelled from Cambodia amid reports of sex crime allegations. In March 2006 he was convicted of sexually abusing two young girls in neighboring Vietnam and spent two-and-a-half years in jail.

Gadd avoided more harsher allegations of child rape, which carried a maximum punishment of execution by firing squad.

He was accused of kissing, fondling, and participating in other sexual actions with the girls.

The former pop sensation was required to sign the sex offenders register upon his return to the UK in 2008.

Before the case that resulted in his most recent conviction went to trial in January 2015, he was detained at his London home in 2012 after being the subject of an investigation by police from Operation Yewtree.
