Teen girl dies in Swan River after shark attack in Perth
In Western Australia, a 16-year-old girl lost her life after being attacked by a shark while swimming in a Swan River.
In the Perth suburb of Fremantle, she was retrieved from the Swan River on Saturday and later declared dead.
The Perth-born girl is thought to have been on a river with pals while riding a jet ski when the incident occurred.
It’s probable, according to Insp. Paul Robinson of the Western Australia Police, that the girl dove into the ocean to swim with dolphins she saw nearby.
The incident was described as “extremely, very painful” and the girl’s family was “totally distraught by the news,” according to him.
It has been advised that people use “extra vigilance” and follow any beach closures.
According to fisheries specialists, finding sharks in that section of the river is unusual, Mr. Robinson said.
Since a thirteen-year-old boy was murdered in the Swan River in January 1923, this is thought to be the first fatal shark attack there.
Each year, Australia registers 20 shark attacks, the majority of which occur in Western Australia and New South Wales.
In 2021, there were two fatal shark attacks; in 2020, there were seven.
In the past, shark bite deaths were uncommon. Australia’s shark attack death rate over more than a century of records is 0.9, or less than one person annually.
