According to US officials, a man was arrested and charged after allegedly disarming an aircraft door mid-flight and attempting to stab a flight attendant.

Francisco Severo Torres, 33, caused a panic on a flight from Los Angeles to Boston when he was seen pacing near an aircraft door before the crew realised it had been unlocked.

Mr Torres was then accused of attacking a crew member with a broken spoon.

On Sunday, he was apprehended at Boston’s Logan International Airport.

The United Airlines flight was scheduled to land in less than an hour when the flight crew noticed an alert that a door had been “disarmed,” according to charging documents.

A flight attendant was dispatched to investigate, and it was discovered that the door’s lock handle had been moved from the fully locked position, and the emergency slide had been deactivated.

Mr Torres had been seen loitering near the door earlier, so cabin crew suspected he had moved the handle.

When confronted by an attendant, Mr Torres allegedly inquired whether there were cameras in the area around the door.

According to charging documents summarised by the Department of Justice, the attendant is said to have told the captain that the passenger “posed a threat to the aircraft and that the captain needed to land the aircraft as soon as possible” after the interaction (DoJ).

Soon after, Mr Torres walked towards the flight attendants before lunging at one “with a broken metal spoon, hitting the flight attendant on the neck area three times”, the summary said.

Passengers on board tackled Mr Torres after he assaulted the flight attendant, according to the report.

Mr Torres had been acting strangely, even asking a fellow passenger where the emergency exit was during takeoff.

Mr Torres told police that he thought the flight attendant was going to kill him, according to sources.

The flight landed safely, and United Airlines praised the “quick action” of the crew and passengers.

Mr. Torres has been barred from flying on United Airlines.

The DoJ says the “interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon provides for a sentence of up to life in prison, up to five years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000”.

Mr Torres, the DoJ added, “is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law”.
