There is no one known to have sabotaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which were damaged in September, according to Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO.

“We have not been able to determine who was behind [the sabotage],” Stoltenberg said. “There are ongoing national investigations, and I think it’s right to wait until those are finalized before we say anything more.”

Stoltenberg’s remarks follow a report by the reputed news paper outlet published on Tuesday that cited fresh intelligence examined by US officials and suggested that the operation may have been carried out by a group that was loyal to Ukraine but working independently of the Kyiv administration.

An important source of income for Russia, the pipelines were shut down at the time of the strike, which took place months after Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
