Over 800,000 of its people have chosen to serve in or reenlist in the military to battle the United States, according to North Korea.

According to Saturday’s edition of North Korea’s official daily, almost 800,000 students and workers nationwide indicated a desire to enlist or reenlist in the military to oppose the United States on Friday alone.

The assertion was made following North Korea’s launch of its Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday in retaliation for continuing military exercises between the US and South Korea.

On Thursday, just hours before the president of South Korea took off for Tokyo for a summit to explore methods of containing the nuclear-armed North, North Korea launched an ICBM into the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan.

The launch was denounced by the governments of Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo since ballistic missiles from the North are prohibited by resolutions of the UN Security Council.

Monday marked the start of 11 days of joint training between South Korean and US soldiers, code-named “Freedom Shield 23,” held on a scale not seen since 2017 to counter the North’s escalating threats.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, charged that the military exercises had raised tensions between North Korea and the US and South Korea.

Belligerent threats are a common way for North Korea to react to what it perceives as “provocations” by the US.

According to experts, aside from the combined military drills and the meeting this week between Presidents Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea and Fumio Kishida of Japan, South Korea has taken issue with US President Joseph Biden’s proposal to host Yoon and his wife at the White House next month.

The state visit, which will take place on April 26 and mark the second of Biden’s presidency, will highlight the tight connections between the US and South Korea.

Strengthening the US-South Korea partnership is one of the conservative Yoon’s top foreign policy priorities.

Similar to Obama, Biden has worked to strengthen the bond between the two countries, notably with a significant visit to Seoul in May 2022 as part of his first trip to Asia as president.

In response to the drills and summits, Pyongyang may “order missile firings of longer ranges, attempt a spy satellite launch, demonstrate a solid-fuel engine, and perhaps even conduct a nuclear test,” according to Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, who spoke with media recently.
